It has been a long time since there has been so much change in Irish politics. Not since the 1920s has the situation been so volatile. Fianna Fail having no political seat in Waterford is a dramatic change as the party always had one even when the electorate turned against them in the 1980s. Waterford saw only one TD retain his seat, that of John Deasy with the retirements of former FF Minister, Martin Cullen, and Brian O’Shea of Labour.
The very difficult economy and rising unemployment has meant that the electorate has taken its revenge. Sweet as this may seem, as the old saying goes. anger is not a policy.
