The strength of feeling over the hospitals issue is still very strong. Last Saturday, once again, there was a large march in Waterford organised by the save WRH campaign. (See photographs on Pages 22 and 23).
It is anticipated that a cabinet meeting will take place this week where the issue of hospitals and health in the South East will be discussed. To date the protest campaign has been very successful with Minister for Health, James Reilly, giving assurances that cancer services will remain in Waterford.
However, there is a huge worry of service reallocation from Waterford to hospitals in Wexford and Kilkenny. There is also a planned tie-in of those hospitals with Dublin in terms of teaching hospitals and Waterford with Cork. The Higgins report has been heavily speculated upon but what will be done in practice is unknown.
