The news that Revenue inspectors have commenced door-to-door enquiries in selected locations across the country, in an effort to flush out tax-cheating landlords, will, I suspect, put the wind up more than a few people.

The tax inspectors believe their random house calls will uncover unregistered landlords who ‘bought-to-rent’ during the boom property years. The operation is part of a key, shadow-economy strategy by Revenue which hopes to collect millions of euro through undeclared rental income and fines.
