THE City Arms on High Street
in Waterford City is celebrating
its first birthday.
Since opening last July, the
city centre bar which is operated
by the Wadding family
has become a popular location
for functions, lunches, or just a
quiet evening drink.
“This is the third version
of The City Arms,” explained
owner Stephen Wadding.
The original City Arms
first opened in 1981 at the
corner of Cooke Lane and
High Street.
“It was very popular with
families. Everybody from
granddad to grandson came
in,” said Stephen.
“At that time in the early
1980s there was no food
served in the bar business.
In the early 1990s, when
City Square was built, we
were relocated to the corner
of High Street and Arundel
Square.”
At this premises, The City
Arms began serving lunches
which proved to be a huge
success.
“This was very popular
with families and tourists,”
said Stephen.
The business closed in
2006 and the Wadding family
moved on to other ventures.
However, last year, The
City Arms re-opened on High
Street in a premises which
was lying derelict
“I said I’d go back to
what I know and love,” said
Stephen.
The result is a sophisticated
venue which is beautifully
designed and finished
and features an impressive
wall panelling made of ash.
“We’re family run and
we cater for families,” said
Stephen.
His wife Vera creates
menus and supervises in the
kitchen.
Stephen said the family
have received tremendous
support from local people
since re-opening.
“A lot of the old customers
are coming back so the tradition
is continued,” he said.
The City Arms serves
breakfasts from 10am-12pm;
lunches from 12pm-3pm;
bar food all day; and regular
evening trade.
A varied menu is on offer
which features Soup, sandwiches
and nibbles; salads,
pizza and pasta dishes; steaks,
burgers and chicken, all at
very reasonable prices.
A special children’s menu
is also available.
The City Arms is used as
a rendezvous spot for many
people who are preparing for
a meal in one of the restaurants
in the area.
“Lots of people who are
going out for dinner come
in here at half seven before
going for a meal elsewhere.
Many then come back here
again later for a drink and
a chat after their meal,”
explained Stephen.
The City Arms is also a
hugely popular venue for
functions as it boasts a very
impressive self-contained
upstairs function area.
The venue caters for all
types of special events: a
social club gathering; birthdays;
christenings; communions;
confirmations, Christmas
parties etc.
All functions take place
upstairs in the self-contained
area which has its own private
bar and toilets and can cater
for between 60-70 people.
“When you book the room
for an event, it’s entirely
yours. It’s not open to the
general public,” said Stephen.
“Every time there’s a function,
we get a booking for
another function.”
