A judge recently accepted jurisdiction in the case of an alleged assault against a man in Waterford last summer.

Dylan Anthony Butler (23) of Apartment 3, Market Square, Portlaw, Waterford appeared before Judge Paula Murphy at a sitting of Waterford District Court recently, charged with assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 (1) and (2) of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

For the purposes of jurisdiction, Sergeant Michael Hickey outlined to the court that on 29 June 2025, Gardaí were called to John Street, Waterford, at around 2.00am. A man reported that he had allegedly been punched in the mouth and was bleeding from his lips as a result. Another man, who was identified as the accused, is alleged to have assaulted him.

Sgt. Hickey said that following the incident, the injured party sought treatment at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and his care was then transferred to the plastic surgery unit at Cork University Hospital (CUH). The Sergeant confirmed that although the injured party had to have 13 stitches on his upper lip, he has since made a full recovery from the incident.

Judge Murphy decided to accept jurisdiction in the case, which means that it will be heard in the District Court. The Judge remanded the accused on continuing bail until 28 April 2026, when the case will be mentioned again for a plea to be indicated.
