It was claimed at the February Plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council that the local authority had missed a major opportunity by not relocating Waterford Bus Station to be part of the new Transport Hub in Ferrybank.

However, Director of Services, Gabriel Hynes, rejected this claim.

“We missed a very big trick when we were putting this Transport Hub in place with the bus station depot remaining where it is,” said Independent Councillor Declan Barry.

“To me a transport hub would be the bridge, it would be the trains, it would be the buses, and if the buses are a kilometre, a kilometre and a half away it doesn’t really work.”

In response Director of Services Gabriel Hynes rejected any idea that the bus station should be relocated.

“In relation to Bus Éireann and where it is located on the south of the quay, there is very logical reason why you would put the two of them together. However, the difficulty of putting the transport hub, the rail, and the buses together is that al the buses would have to go over Rice Bridge, that would be a problem,” he said.

“From a frequency point-of-view, and ensuring that we get efficiency with BusConnects, the location of the bus terminal is probably the appropriate location,” Mr. Hynes added.
