A Waterford District Court Judge recently accepted jurisdiction in the case of a man accused of assaulting someone for “no obvious reason.”

Martin Creed (34) of no fixed abode, is charged with assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 (1) and (2) of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. This related to an alleged incident in October 2025.

At a sitting of Waterford District Court last month, it was outlined for jurisdiction purposes that on 9 October, 2025, the alleged injured party in the case reported that they were walking on Meagher’s Quay, Waterford, after 8.00 pm.

A man walking in the opposite direction, who was identified as the accused, was then alleged to have punched the injured party in the nose for “no obvious reason” as he walked past them. The court was told the injured party was bleeding following the alleged assault, and CCTV footage from the area reportedly identified the accused.

Judge Kevin Staunton decided to accept jurisdiction in the case, meaning it will be heard at the District Court. The Judge put the matter back to 5 May, 2026, when it will be mentioned again.
