Fine Gael Councillor, Frank Quinlan, has called on Waterford Council to lead by example in relation to grubby shop fronts.

These comments come following a presentation to Waterford Council outlining plans for new apartments above stores on Parade Quay, along with a public plaza behind the quay-front terrace, near Reginald’s Tower.

“The presentation on Parade Quay leaves a lot to be desired,” said Cllr Quinlan. “We are offering a grant to businesses in the City to encourage them to have their shop fronts looking and the Local Authority is doing the opposite.”

The Urban Façade Improvement Scheme looks to support the improvement of visible facades in Waterford’s prominent areas by paying up to 50% of improvement costs, with a maximum allocation of €2,000.

“It wouldn’t take much to have the Quay front looking clean and presentable,” Cllr Quinlan continued. “Especially coming into the tourist season with so many coming to visit the location, unaware of the planned developments.”

Cllr Quinlan suggested that future developments were no reasons to have these Council-owned buildings looking so run down.

“A bit of paint would transform the area while waiting for the development to start. Especially for the tourism season as first impressions last,” he added.
