A man and woman charged in connection with the fatal Birchwood house fire in Waterford city last week have both been further remanded in custody.

Cian Stacey (21) of no fixed abode, appeared before Judge Catriona Murray at Waterford District Court today (Tuesday, 20 October) by video link from Limerick Prison.

Jessica Dalton (31) with an address in Waterford city, was produced in the same court sitting from prison.

They both face charges of alleged criminal damage, and two counts each of alleged assault causing serious harm, against individuals who cannot be named for legal reasons.

No members of the public were present in the courtroom as both appeared, as a large presence of Gardaí and the local community were visible both inside and outside Waterford Courthouse this morning.

Acting for Mr. Stacey, solicitor Ken Cunningham told the court that no application for bail was being made for his client on this occasion, and he was consenting to a further 28 day remand in custody.

Sergeant John Phelan informed Judge Murray that a new charge was being preferred against Stacey, which is a separate unrelated traffic matter. The Sergeant requested for this charge to travel with others faced by Stacey.

Judge Murray granted this request and remanded Mr. Stacey in custody to appear before Waterford District Court again on 17 November, 2026 by video link.

Jessica Dalton was then produced in court from prison wearing a tracksuit top and leggings.

Also acting on behalf of Ms. Dalton, Mr. Cunningham stated that she was produced in court to ‘perhaps ventilate’ a bail application, but after taking instruction, he added that this would not proceed.

The solicitor added that Ms. Dalton would continue to reserve her position on bail, and was consenting to a 28 day remand in custody.

Judge Murray remanded Ms. Dalton in custody to appear before Waterford District Court also on 17 November, 2026 by video link.
