Plans for the construction of a major wetlands habitat adjoining the Back Strand in Tramore, have met with serious concern from Waterford Airport Company, local farmers and landowners, school parents and residents of the area, a meeting of Waterford Co. Council heard this week.
Waterford Co. Council outlined plans to lay out the wetland at Kilmacleague West, to compensate for the loss of habitat caused by the ‘remediated’ Tramore Landfill which has now been closed down. The project envisages the breaching of the existing sea dyke to enable flooding of the new wetland area and the construction of a new embankment.
Material for the construction of the new embankment will come from sites in Castletown and Ballygunner which are the subject of remediation by the European Court of Justice.
