Waterford United recorded their most impressive victory to date in pre-season games on Saturday last when they defeated a full-strength Sporting Fingal team in Cahir Park.
Following on from victories in Tralee, Cappoquin and Tallow, allied to holding St Patricks Athletic to a draw at the RSC, this really was the real deal as the excitement mounts ahead of the opening league fixture against Wexford Youths this Friday at Kilbarry.
Saturday’s match was part of the local club’s centenary celebrations. Vinny Sullivan brought his total of pre-season goals to seven when he scored in the first half. Sporting Fingal, who will play their first ever game in the Premier League this Friday against champions Bohemians, equalised early in the second half but the Blues fought back and regained their lead through Alan Carey and a Paul McCarthy strike added the polish.
