New regulations which increase the minimum standards of a building’s energy efficiency requirements have been welcomed by the Managing Director of a Waterford-based company.

Speaking last week, Brenda Jordan of National Energy Assessors, based in the city’s business park on the Cork Road, said the new part L building regulations are “good news for the consumer”.

“While there may be more work needed at the planning and build stage of the project, the rewards in the long term will be well worth the effort put in at this stage,” she explained.

“The regulations will mean a dramatic improvement in the energy rating of a new property. This will lead to increased savings for the consumer once they move into their new property. And when the energy efficiency improves we also see benefits environmentally. So it’s good news all round.”

The new regulations, which came into legislative force in February, ensure that building standards will move from the previous C1/2 level up to a B1 level.

Under the new regulations, air tightness testing will become mandatory for all new buildings where planning permission has been applied for on or after July 1st.
