Of course, we don’t know the specific details of the case but the report in last week’s Kilkenny People newspaper by Mary Cody about two five-year-old children scavenging for food in the city’s refuse bins made depressing reading indeed. Luckily, the children were spotted by a social worker who contacted the HSE which will deal with the situation but one wonders how many other hungry children there are around the country. These days, poverty is very often a hidden scourge and food on the table is usually one of the first casualties as families struggle to keep up appearances.
