About half a million people are expected in Waterford over the four days of the Tall Ships Festival and up to 200,000 on the Saturday, Mayor Mary Roche told Monday night’s meeting of the City Council.
Claiming that in 2005 the event was worth an estimated €30 million to the local economy, she said the city could reap a far greater dividend this time around, thanks in large part to the huge organisational effort and marketing programme set in train by the organising committee, headed up by Des Whelan.
