An elderly man underwent surgery at Waterford Regional Hospital last (Thursday) night after being knocked down by an articulated truck at The Quay some hours earlier.

Retired garda Louis Murphy (82), from Carrigavantry, was dragged for some distance underneath the truck in the vicinity of The Clock Tower. He had been crossing the road as the traffic lights turned green.

The accident happened at 5.15 and he sustained serious injuries. He was rushed by ambulance to hospital where this morning he was said to be in a stable condition in intensive care following surgery.
