Seems I upset at least one person – who didn’t leave his name – with the caption to last week’s photograph on the Waterford hurlers being locked out of the dressing-rooms in Kilmacthomas during half-time in the Crystal Cup opener against CIT. Apparently it wasn’t a case of the key being missing but rather the lock seized and couldn’t be opened. In fairness (and apologies for any offence caused – maybe I should have kept my mouth, er, ‘shut’), I’m told that apart from the unfortunate lockout the local club’s organisation of the game, including the preparation of the pitch, was otherwise top-notch. And sure I’m half-Kilmac’ myself.
The county hurlers’ next assignment is a juvenile fundraising challenge against three-time All-Ireland club champions Portumna at St Molleran’s on Saturday afternoon. It could be argued that the Galway kingpins, who outclassed De La Salle in last year’s St Patrick’s Day decider in Croke Park, are as good, if not better, than the Tribesmen’s first-XV so it’ll be a decent workout for Waterford’s new-look panel.
