Two well-taken goals by Kilmacthomas striker Kealon Kiersey helped his side to a four-nil win over Tycor at a wind-swept Tycor Park on Saturday last.
Both clubs are celebrating 60 years in Waterford Junior football and it was Kilmacthomas who took the honours on this occasion. The scoreline will suggest that Kilmac won easy but that was far from the story. Tycor had countless chances to score but they failed to find the net after they created a hatful of goalscoring chances. On the other hand any chance Kilmacthomas got they took and on that premise Kilmac fully deserved to go into the hat for the second round of the FAI Junior Cup.
Tycor got off to a good start as they won the toss and played with a strong wind to their backs. However, it was Kilmacthomas who had the first goalscoring chance on 8 minutes. Martin Coffey turned sharply inside the box but from a good position he fired over the top.
Minutes later Tycor won the first corner kick of the game. Brendan O’Shea crossed into the box but Pat Kelly rushed his strike and the ball sailed wide.
Both goalkeepers were kept busy as Kilmac’s Arron Fanning saved well from Dean Noblett and Clint Power. At the other end Tycor keeper Ken Wall had to be on his toes to keep out a David Power header and then a close range effort from Martin Coffey.
On the half-hour mark Tycor went close to taking the lead. A long throw-in by Andrew Hearne caused confusion in the box and Eddie Kelly took full advantage. However, his well struck volley smashed against the post with Fanning beaten.
Back came Kilmac’ and the ever-dangerous Martin Coffey pulled the ball back for Sean Sutton, but just as he was about to pull the trigger Lee Dalton got across to block his goal-bound shot.
With a minute left in the first half Tycor won a free kick on the edge of the box. Mark Kennedy lined up the free, his effort beat Fanning but the ball clipped the crossbar and went over.
With half-time looming Kilmac’ took the lead. Tycor conceded a silly free kick 25 yards from goal. John Cleary marched forward from the back and drove a low powerful drive into the net beyond the diving Ken Wall.
