The Waterford Youth side are through to the final of this season’s Inter League Youth Cup final following a thrilling game in Donegal on Saturday last. It has been a real rollercoaster of a campaign for Anthony Brown’s team this season and they had to did deep to win this game and set up a final date with Wexford Youths in Ozier Park on Saturday, May 10th.
Mick Wallace’s team defeated the Cork League in the other semi final in Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday afternoon. Donegal led one-nil at half-time and they deserved their lead. Such was their dominance they could have led by more but they were made pay for their inability to finish off chances when Paul Carey of Southend United found the Donegal net with a brilliant free-kick early in the second half.
Waterford took control of the game following that equaliser and they could have put the home side away but during the last 10 minutes of extra-time it was Donegal who came back strong once again.
Extra-time was tight so the game had to be decided by penalties and Waterford came out on top. Paul Carey, Eddie Barrett, Mitchell Casey, Gavin Falconer and goalkeeper Kevin Burns were the net-finders from the spot.
Kevin Burns played a major role because not only did he score the winning penalty but he also saved Donegal’s 4th. Another penalty scorer, Eddie Barrett, could go into the record books if Waterford win the final. Eddie, son of Bohemians clubman Martin, won Harty Cup and All-Ireland Colleges Hurling medals with De La Salle.
What an incredible treble of medals that would be for the young Bohemians player.
