A man had his lower lip bitten off during a vicious fight at the city’s Viking House hostel on Tuesday afternoon.
Gardai were called to the hostel on Coffee House Lane, which houses asylum seeker men, shortly after lunchtime, following reports of a dispute between two men. During the course of the row, one of the men had received head injuries and the other, an Angolan, had his lip completely severed off.
Both men were brought to Waterford Regional Hospital for treatment and were later questioned by gardai.
Meanwhile Gardai are continuing their investigations into a series of burglaries that took place last weekend. Two houses in Kilcohan Park were targeted on Friday night, while a house at Gracedieu was broken into on Saturday night.
Also on Saturday night, at a house in Bromley Way, Ardkeen Village, the occupants heard a window being broken and, when they went to investigate, they saw a small white car bring driven away from the house. A man was later arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in relation to this incident. A file is being prepared for the DPP.
Butlerstown Church was broken into on Friday night, with the perpetrators gaining entry through a rear door. Some church envelopes were opened during the raid but gardai say little was stolen. On Saturday, a window was broken at the Aldi store in Ferrybank and some electrical items taken.
