On Sunday next with a 12 noon start the Munster Intermediate Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships are in Coolaclare, Co Clare and also on the programme are the boys and girls U9, 11, U13, 15 and 17 championships.

The first race will be the girls U9 at 12 noon sharp. Waterford will be well represented at the fixture in each category and all travelling please get to the venue well before the fixture begins and keep athletes well warmed up for their races as the winter is now well in.

The venue is situated off the N68 main road from Ennis to Kilrush beyond Knockalough and will be signposted a few miles beyond this village in a right handed direction to Cooraclare.

Local pair in Belgium

This weekend there is an International Cross Country event in Belgium and three athletes from Ferrybank AC are competing. The three are Paddy Hogan and Lorraine McCarthy and Kevin Cooper.

David McCarthy on form

In the USA at the weekend David McCarthy West Waterford AC had another fine run in the big east Collegiate Championships in New York.

The race was won by Andrew Bunbalough, Georgetown in 23 minutes 55 seconds and McCarthy was times at 24 minutes 25 seconds for the 8km run.

Winter Leagues

This Thursday the annual winter Road Running League begins in the city at the RSC organised by Waterford AC.

The West Waterford AC league began last week on Wednesday and will continue each Wednesday at the Dungarvan Sports Centre at 7.15pm.

Waterford AC AGM

It’s that time of year again when athletic clubs all over the country will hold their Annual General Meetings.

On Monday November 17th the Waterford Athletic Club AGM will be in St Paul’s Community College at 7.15. All members and new members welcome.

Mary Again

On Monday week in the Dublin City Marathon the ageless Mary Ryan Jennings, Waterford AC won the over 50 section and in the process won the All Ireland title in that age group.

Big Tramore Fixture

On Sunday November 23rd one of the big Cross Country races of the season will be staged on Tramore Racecourse. In the All Ireland junior and senior Inter County Championships and also the juvenile uneven age groups.

Close to 2,000 athletes from the thirty two counties will be competing, including a number from clubs in Waterford. The races will not be run on the actual race track but on the open area inside the track. Waterford AC promote the fixture on behalf of Athletics Ireland.

Other November Fixtures

On Sunday November 16th in St Augustine’s College, Abbeyside the County ‘B’ Juvenile Championships U9, 11, 13, 15 and the Masters and Intermediate Championships have a 1p.m. start. All clubs please note in the juvenile races medals for first six home, no team prizes.


On Saturday next there will be an EGM of Athletics Ireland in the Sheraton Hotel,
Athlone at 10.30am on Saturday week, November 15th the National Athletic Annual Awards Banquet will be in the Crown Plaza Hotel.
