The editor of RTE’s top current affairs programme has apologised for a report aired last week which suggested that only one candidacy for the Waterford Dáil by-election had been publicly declared.
In correspondences to Senator Paudie Coffey and Councillor David Cullinane, Prime Time’s Ken O’Shea acknowledged the error in the October 12th broadcast, which suggested that Cllr John Halligan stood alone on a list of would-be TDs.
“The team working on the item should have been fully aware that Mr Halligan was not the only declared candidate and, having spoken to the team…they fully agree with that,” he wrote.
In his email to Messrs Cullinane and Coffey, Mr O’Shea stated that the suggestion of there being just one Waterford candidate “slipped into the script because of the way we put the report together”.
The Prime Time report focused on the Dáil vacancies in Waterford, Dublin South and Donegal South-West, with the edited piece speedily cutting between the three aforementioned constituencies.
