Listening to the new Naxos double CD of William Vincent Wallace’s romantic opera, Lurline, is a gloriously proud experience. For over two and a half hours the melodies and waltz style tunes washed over me. Wallace with Maritana (famous all over the world) gave Waterford people a wonderful sense of musical pride in our historic heritage and this offering from Richard Bonynge with the Victorian Opera Chorus and Orchestra with top class soloists adds to that sense of importance. This would make a memorable Christmas gift with beautiful music, an inspirational overture, storms, a wonderful river song – Flow on, Oh Silver Rhine, a powerful Barcarolle – Our Barque in Silence. A glorious From His Palace of Crystal and a wonderful Sweet Form. There is also a fine choral Ave Maria.
