Rebecca Storm, the first lady of Irish musical theatre, got the new look Waterford International Music Festival off to an auspicious start with a first class international flavour of musical and musical theatre.

With a quality four piece band of Andy O’Callaghan (keyboards), Des Lacy (drums), Kenny Shearer (electric bass) and Waterford’s Brendan Doyle on wind instruments, this was memorable evening filled with beautiful and nostalgic moments as the old festival of forty-nine years handed over to the future without speeches or palaver, just crowd-pleasing entertainment.

A Carpenter’s Long Ago segued into Mary Hopkin’s Those Were The Days and a beautiful Sunrise Sunset set the lovely lingering feeling of nostalgia – I don’t remember growing older….laden with happiness and tears.

The jazzy Duke Ellington classic Beginning To See The Light moved the mood along into a wonderful Streisand selection – People Who Need People, Rain On My Parade, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers and Second Hand Rose completed the transition into a sax solo from Brendan Doyle to set the pace for a resounding Winner Takes It All.
