The WIT Youth Orchestra, under the fine direction of Deirdre Scanlon, go the WIT Music School Showcase Concert off to a fine start with Overture To Zampa at The Chapel at WIT College Street. Vanessa Sadlier added an Irish touch of class with Balfe’s I Dreamt I Dwelt In Marble Halls before the youngest performer of the evening, Anna Walsh, delighted on violin with a testing Toodle Pip.

Sarah Brennan shone on piano with A Passing Thought. High Point of the opening section was Una Connery (piano) and Stephen Mackey (clarinet) in excellent form for two Schumann Fantasiestuke.

Niall Crowley’s wonderful direction of the WIT Youth Choir impressed with a haunting Shenandoah.

After the interval Sinead Dempsey excelled with her Waterford Larks Choir and Joe Whelan was in beautiful form for Asturias by Albeniz Whelan can make the guitar sing such is his skill.

Treasa Murphy on piano showed her prowess with a delightful Mozart Allegro and Rachel Keating was in splendid form for an Allegro Brilliante and showed why she has made it to the National Youth Orchestra.

A beautiful treat was Gerald Dower on flute for Marian Ingoldsby’s new composition Aubade for Flute and Piano. Great to hear new work and Marian played the piano. Dower finished off with two wonderful Bach pieces, Minuet and Badinerie and the WIT Jazz group finished out the evening in happy music.
