A visually-impaired Waterford city centre shopowner was the victim of a vicious robbery on Friday night that left him requiring a substantial amount of stitches.

John Walsh, who has run a small shop and off licence on George’s Street for many years, was inside his premises at approximately 7pm when the culprit forced entry, brandished a knife and demanded money.

It is understood that Mr Walsh was tied up and cut with the knife during the course of the robbery and he later required a substantial number of stitches at Waterford Regional Hospital. The culprit stole a sum of money and some alcohol before fleeing the scene.

The scene was examined by Gardai and they have appealed for anyone who was in the vicinity of George’s Street on Friday night and saw anything suspicious to contact them on 051 874 888.
