Having served the people of Waterford for close on 120 years, the now small community of St John of God Sisters in the city is dispersing for practical and medical reasons in the best interests of the nuns themselves.

A statement released on behalf of the Order reveals that of the five Sisters currently living at The Cloisters, John’s Hill, three are moving on.

Said a spokesperson for the St John of God Order: “Like most Religious Congregations in Ireland, we are an ageing community and our numbers are decreasing. We are fortunate to have two Communities (one in Wexford and one in Kilkenny) where we are able to provide a level of care – medical and otherwise – appropriate to individual Sisters as the need arises.
