The inclusion of 23 local primary and post primary schools in the Summer Works Scheme has been widely welcomed in the locality.
The scheme, which returns this year after a 12 month deferral period, provides for over 1,180 small and medium scale building works to be carried out during the summer months in schools, causing a minimum of disruption in the academic year. Some of the works eligible for funding include, structural, mechanical, electrical, and gas.
The city schools to qualify were: S N Ursula Naofa, Ursuline Convent, St Stephens NS, S N Deaglan Portlairge, Our Lady of Mercy Senior Primary School, Military Road, St Josephs Special School, Parnell Street, St Saviours NS, Ballybeg, Mount Sion CBS NS, Barrack Street, Waterpark NS, Park Road, Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, Ozanam Street and Waterford College of Further Education, Parnell Street.
In the county, works will be carried out at Aglish NS, Cappoquin, Passage East NS, Passage East, Ballyduff B 2 NS, Ballyduff, An Baile Nua Cill Mhic Thomais Fhinn, Fionnabhair NS, Fionnabhair, Cnoc Machan Bun Machan, Whitechurch NS, Ceapach Ceapach, S N Aine Nfa Seafield Bonmahon, Clonea NS, Carrick on Suir, St Mary’s NS, Dungarvan, Scoil Na Mbraithre, Dungarvan. St Augustines College, Abbeyside and Ard Scoil Na Ndeise, Convent Road.
Praising the scheme, Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism said it would afford each individual school the opportunity to negotiate in respect of their own works schedule, thereby ensuring maximum value for money can be achieved. “”This scheme will also act as a fillip for the local construction industry providing a welcome opportunity to work locally”, he added. Candidates in the upcoming local election Cllr Tom Murphy and Gearoid Ryan have also welcomed the initiative.
