For the second week in a row Dungarvan were involved in the game of the round and the outcome was the same, with Tallow maintaining their perfect start to this year’s county senior hurling championship at Cappoquin on Sunday.
Whist the record books will show that the Bridesiders prevailed by a single score, the real winner was the game of hurling as both sides served up an epic contest where the outcome was in doubt right to the very end.
Tallow got off to a flying start, hitting three points inside the opening five minutes to race into the lead. This was wiped out by the eleventh minute, however, when Johnny Lynch, having collected a Liam Ryan pass, blasted past Shaun O’Sullivan in the Tallow goal, adding to Colm Curran’s earlier point.
The remainder of the half proved to be tight, with Dungarvan retiring to their dressing room at the interval holding a 1-6 to 0-8 lead.
In the opening two minutes of the second period they added two further points to give them a 1-8 to 0-8 advantage. Paul O’Brien and Paul Kearney kept Tallow in touch with a brace of points before Johnny Lynch, Gavin Crotty and the Curran brothers all hit efforts from play to stretch Dungarvan’s lead to five with thirteen minutes of the half played.
