Concerning this column (‘Waterford hurling is at a crossroads’, Aug 20) emailer Jack Richards makes the following point, with which plenty would agree I’m sure: “Let’s face facts. Tipperary had the edge. Tipp was always going to win. The reason Davy adopted a defensive posture is because of weaknesses in the backline. Of course Davy made mistakes. But it is easy for the hurler on the ditch. Perhaps you might consider senior hurling management yourself. The simple fact is that Waterford won the Munster Senior Hurling Championship. Not a bad return at all. Over the next few years the younger talent will eventually feed through to the senior team.”
Munster titles aren’t to be sniffed at, given how long it took to win one. But there’s a bigger picture. And if everyone entitled to an opinion had to be inter-county playing/management standard there’d be a few handfuls at matches. As for trying senior hurling management myself, maybe as a mere columnist I could get a ‘ghost manager’ to do it for me?
