Talk Talk’s shock announcement on Wednesday last demonstrated just how vulnerable this local economy is to one large company deciding to shut up shop.
What it has done is, at long, long last, illustrated at national media level, the extent not only of Waterford’s ills, but those of this entire south east region.
The campaign for a University in the region may have been boosted as a result of Talk Talk’s decision, but it doesn’t conceal the generations of neglect from central government when it comes to the south east.
Despite the intervention of both Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, it would appear that Talk Talk is not for the turning and that the Waterford plant will close on October 7th.
