There was widespread sorrow expressed last week following the death of David Coad. Aged 51 years David was a member of the famous Coad family dynasty and his passing at such an early age left the entire community numb. He played football with the St Paul’s club, and also lined out with St Saviour’s and Waterford Crystal.
He was also signed for Waterford United and in doing so became the third generation of the family to play for the Blues.
Later on he got involved with the Villa Club as his son Conor was learning his trade there as a player and coach.
During his short life he was also a fine musician and he performed with various line-ups from time to time.

He played lead guitar with such groups as ‘Walbeck Border’, ‘The Wave Assembly’, ‘Rhubarb Rhubarb’ and ‘Soul Reazon’.
David’s father Seamie ‘The Major’ Coad was one of the greatest players ever to wear the Waterford FC jersey and his uncle, the late Paddy Coad has been described by many experts as the greatest ever player to grace the League of Ireland.He is survived by his son Conor, brothers Gary and Nigel and his sister Laura and his heartbroken Mother Helena, Dad Seamie and extended family.
David died on Thursday, July 26th and his remains were removed from Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street on Saturday, July 28th at 6.30pm to St Paul’s Church.
Requiem Mass was celebrated on Sunday last, July 29th at 1.30pm and he was laid to rest afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Ballygunner.
During the Funeral Mass David’s beloved Fender Stratocaster guitar was placed beside his coffin. His nephew Aaron delivered the tribute to David and he recalled his uncle’s love of football and especially music.
When the coffin was being removed from the church a version of ‘I’ve Still Got The Blues For You’ was played and it featured the incredible guitar playing of David when he was a member of ‘Soul Reazon’. When David’s remains reached St Mary’s Cemetery, the St Paul’s Football Club formed a guard of honour wearing their club jerseys with pride. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
