 and in the juvenile section there were very good results by athletes from West Waterford AC.

 

Sinead Flynn, a most consistent young athlete, had a brilliant run in the under-12 grade to finish second in a huge entry and in the same race Kate McGrath, also from West Waterford, was 12th. West Waterford took the club bronze team medals, the other scorers being Lorna Cummins, Bronagh Condon and Chloe Fennell. Sinead Flynn was also on the winning Munster team.

Another West Waterford athlete Kate Veale, better known in race walking circles, also performed with distinction to finish in 6th place in the under-16 grade and she was a member of the winning Munster team.

In the under 12 race Tadg Brennan, Ferrybank, was 15th. In the junior races Niamh Ryan Ferrybank AC was 7th in the ladies and Beth Walsh, do, 16th, and in the men’s Paddy Flynn, again from Ferrybank, was 10th with Alex Flynn, do, 21st.

The winner of the Men’s senior race was Alan Ledwith from Meath and there would be relations of his in Waterford. Mary Cullen, Sligo won the senior women’s, Ciara Mageean, Antrim the junior women’s, and Michael Mc Killop, Antrim the junior men’s.

The first three in the senior races are automatically selected on the Irish teams for the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin next month.

Sunday’s Munster Fixture

On Sunday next, November 29th, with a 12 noon start in Moyglass, Co Tipperary (near Fethard) the Munster Masters Men’s and Women’s and Juvenile “B” Cross Country Championships for boys and girls will be staged.

The Juvenile age groups are under-9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. There will be many athletes from Waterford clubs competing in most of the events.

The following Sunday the All Ireland Novice and Juvenile Uneven Cross Country Championships are in Coleraine, Co Derry.

On Sunday December 13th the European Cross Country Championships are in Santry, Dublin, the big attraction of the season in Ireland with champions from all over Europe competing.

Half-Marathon

Waterford Athletic Club have an Open Half-Marathon starting near the RSC on Sunday, December 12th at 11 am. See club website for this and lots of other news.

Good NY Marathon Run

Last week John Cleary from the Ferrybank club competed in the New York Marathon and had a fine run to finish in a time of 2hrs 38 minutes and 46 seconds. In a field of over 44,000 he finished in 133rd place overall – a very creditable performance.

Annual General Meetings

Waterford Athletic Club have their AGM on Wednesday next December 2nd at 8pm in the Presentation Convent, and all members asked to attend.

West Waterford juvenile section have their AGM on Monday next at 8.30 pm in Minnie’s, Abbeyside and the West Waterford senior meeting is on again in Minnie’s on Thursday, December 10th at 8.30.

Winter League

On Thursday evening of this week the Winter League continues in the City starting at the RSC at 7 pm with registration at approx 6.10; all are asked to come along in good time, and the league will continue all during the winter each Thursday evening. Due to the weather the event was quite rightly cancelled last week.

Annual Quantum Life

Dungarvan 10 launched

At a press launch last Wednesday evening at Dungarvan Sports Centre, West Waterford Athletic Club announced details of their 19th Annual Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race, sponsored again in 2010 by Quantum Life.

In the presence of deputising Dungarvan Town Mayor, Cllr Ann Marie Rossiter, Mel Shanley of Quantum Life (sponsor) announced his continued support of the event and said he was delighted to be associated with such a well-organised race.

The club’s road racing coordinator Gerry Cantwell said the race will take place on Sunday 31st January, starting at 1pm. With the increase in n umbers participating the organising committee have decided that the race will be a pre-entry event only with an entry cut off date of Monday, January 18th. No entries will be taken after this date and no entries will be accepted on race day. The race headquarters will again this year be at the Dungarvan Sports Centre located at Quanns in the town centre.
