An on-fire Waterford United got their new season off to a winning start when they proved too strong for a very useful Wexford Youths side in a fiercely contested South East derby at the RSC on Friday night last before an attendance of 683 supporters.

It is much too early to start making predictions but, without doubt, the new Blues looked very promising indeed and if they can maintain that form, and especially their sharpness in front of goal, they will surely be contenders for the title and promotion.

United opened the scoring after only 7 minutes when Timmy Purcell played a beautiful through ball to Vinnie Sullivan who ghosted into the six-yard box to the right of goal. His former Blues colleague Pakie Holden advanced off the Wexford line but the striker calmly steered the ball past him before slipping it into the net from three yards.

The score earned Sullivan the accolade of bagging the earliest goal on the first night of the new league campaigns.

Two minutes later, United almost doubled their score when Purcell advanced through the middle and stroked another tantalising ball across a crowded goalmouth but a defender marshalled the ball back to Holden.
