FAI Cup champions of two seasons ago Carrick United are on the march once again following a rip-roaring game with Tramore in Tom Drohan Park on Sunday afternoon.
This was cup football at its very best but it has to be said that the ‘Super Hoops’ deserved their ticket into the last 64. There is a nice balance to this current Carrick side and the addition of Alan Coady and Michael Coady has added greatly to the strength of the squad and the manager Brian Barry has plenty of riches to work with. Tramore played well but they lacked that cutting edge required in what was a real full-blooded tie.
A lone strike from winger Anthony Power proved good enough as the 2008 champions just had the edge against the seasiders who had second half substitute Dayne Ormonde sent off on 71 minutes after a high challenge on Carrick defender Anthony O’Donnell.
In a game that had referee Tony Walsh on his toes throughout, the home side just held the edge over the 90 minutes and they can now look forward to the next round as they bid to get a grip back on the National Cup.
