Clonmel's Levi Whelan and Evergreen's Brian Jordan try to win possession.
The opening semi-final of the revamped Permanent TSB Cup provided plenty of talking points as the Kilkenny League champions Evergreeen advanced to the final. The Tipperary League winners had their manager sent off. Their goalkeeper also saw red and the first two goals that they conceded came from an OG and a penalty. Things did not go according to plan it must be said for Clonmel Town. Star of the show was the former Waterford United player Joe Mulcahy. The striker who played last season under the guidance of Stephen Henderson was involved in everything positive from an Evergreeen point of view.
Martin Tynan, the former Waterford Crystal striker who has moved on to Clonmel, created the first chance of the game when he squared the ball from the right to Jimmy Hynes but the Evergreen goalkeeper Pierce Deegan produced a good save. The opening goal arrived in the eighth minute in crazy circumstances. Joe Mulcahy sent in a hard shot from the edge of the penalty area. Ray Condon, the Town centre half headed the ball off the line but it struck his colleague Conor Conneally on the back of the head and it flew past the bemused goalkeeper Evan Comerford.
Things got worse for Clonmel on 20 minutes. Joe Mulchahy raced into the penalty area before he was taken from behind by Ray Condon and Mulcahy dispatched the resultant spot kick with ease. Evergreen were presented with an opportunity to get back into the game on 34 minutes when full back Vinny O’Brien struck a weak back-pass to his goalkeeper Pierce Deegan. Shane Flynn reached the ball first but he shot wide when really he should have scored.
