If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. That motto paid off for Mount Sion on Thursday morning last in Ben Wadding Park. The competition, which is now in its sixth year, has been dominated by St Declan’s and St Stephen’s during that period and despite some brave efforts the Monastery school never managed to win the trophy until last week.
The sun blazed down on both sets of players and no doubt the late great Jack Kennedy was watching from above, and he would have been delighted to see the Mount Sion players, their manager Michael Forristal and coach Michael Mooney enjoy their hour of glory for the first time.
The Cnoc Sion boys always held the upper hand, and although St Stephen’s gave their all there was no doubt that the best team on the day won the silverware.
Dream start
Mount Sion got off to the perfect start after less than six minutes when Jake Mooney turned provider for Justin Croke but while goalkeeper Billy Nolan made a fantastic save to deny the midfielder, Darragh Barry was on hand to fire the rebound to the corner of the net.
’Sion netminder De Mitro that came to his side’s rescue shortly afterwards when he did superbly well to keep out a right-wing Adam McNamara corner kick.
