Passage booked their place in the quarter-finals of the senior hurling championship with a facile victory over a depleted Dungarvan side at Walsh Park last Sunday. Dungarvan were forced to field without the injured duo of Jamie Nagle and Karl Duggan as well as the exam-tied Colm Curran and the net result of these losses was a real pasting for last year’s Intermediate champions.
Passage won the toss and elected to play with the strong breeze blowing down towards the town end in Walsh Park. They wasted no time in asserting their authority on this game and led by 0-2 to 0-0 after two minutes with Aaron Connors and Killian Fitzgerald finding the target. The size of Dungarvan’s challenge grew even more in the fifth minute when a mix-up in the Dungarvan full-back line allowed diminutive corner-forward, Patrick Walsh to score the opening goal of the game.
Eoin Kelly had been strangely anonymous in the opening ten minutes of the game but he announced his presence in dramatic circumstances in the eleventh minute. A long clearance by Jason Flood was won well by Kelly and he held off the challenge of Derek Barry before finding the corner of the Dungarvan net.
Although this is a rather young Passage side, they do have some physicality dotted around the side. In Brian Carey, Killian Fitzgerald, Conor Carey and Eoin Kelly they have some big men for whom Dungarvan simply had no answer.
In the first twenty minutes it was just the goals between the sides at Cormac Curran frees and the industry of Jonathan O’Regan kept the Old Boro side in the game.
