Two managers well known in this neck of the woods were on opposite sides of one of the new decade’s biggest GAA upsets on Sunday.
Carlow, managed by Mount Sion’s Kevin Ryan, were shock victors over Wexford in Division 2 of the National Hurling League, whose boss of course is WIT trainer, Tipp man Colm Bonnar.
Ryan, who was a selector under Justin McCarthy before taking up the reins at Oulart da Ballagh, was a contender for the Model County job after John Meyler was forced out, but has instead taken over where Jim Greene left off in Carlow and has made them competitive, with the addition of Gerry Fitzpatrick as part of the Dolmenmen’s backroom team an obvious plus.
Wexford, however, will be wondering how they’ve got to their current low ebb. It’s certainly looks like their great goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry knew what he was doing in giving up the ghost of ’96.
