Davy Fitzgerald made five changes in personnel to the side beaten by Colm Bonnar’s men and of those that started both matches a number moved to different starting positions, as options were explored ahead of the July 11th encounter with Cork at Semple Stadium.
While Liam Sheedy will have bene the happier manager afterwards, there were some positives for the Deise: 1-23 in any game is a handsome total and Ken McGrath, after playing fifty-plus minutes against Wexford, came on to get another half here, while his brother Eoin has happily rediscovered his confidence, contributing 1-2 after also entering the fray at the break.
There were also negatives, however, and there’s no point in glossing over them. Having conceded 3-17 against Wexford, 2-25 was shipped by the Waterford defence in this one. All six of the Tipperary forwards that started got on the score sheet in the first half, along with their two midfielders and David Young from wing back.
Tipperary at the end of a first half which saw Waterford rely mainly on Eoin Kelly Seamus Prendergast and Richie Foley for scores trailing 0-15 to 0-13.
