Rathgormack avenged their defeat in last year’s Eastern Final when they beat De La Salle in this year’s final at Fenor last Friday evening. Whatever this game lacked in quality, it certainly made up for in terms of excitement as Barry Twomey’s late penalty ensured that the game went right down to the wire. A slight gasp went up before the first whistle, when the De La Salle side took to the field, complete with a certain John Mullane in the number 9 jersey.

Despite the presence of the All-Star hurler in waiting, an excellent point from centre-half-back Vinny Murray set Rathgormack on their way.

This lead was short-lived as ace attacker Barry Twomey converted a free to level the scores. The same player then converted another free to put the city side into the lead for the first time.

Rathgormack were on top in midfield with Kevin O’Hara in particular to the fore and goalkeeper, Eamon Dalton twice coming to the rescue of his side with excellent saves to deny Tony Bolger and Kenny Hassett.
