Waterford United made it four victories from their opening four games when they defeated a hard-working Salthill Devon team in Drom on Saturday night last. It was the first ever meeting of the teams in the League of Ireland.
The Waterford team have now scored seven goals and have yet to concede a goal and they now enjoy a four points cushion from second placed Shelbourne and five from Limerick, Athlone Town and Derry City.
The Blues manager Stephen Henderson summed up the game perfectly after the game. “It was a tiny pitch and they mad a real battle out of it. An ugly win I think they call it, but we won and kept another clean sheet and that is super. Liam Kearney’s red card was a bad decision to say the least, but we won and now we must focus on another trip to Galway next week. We expected a tough game from Salthill Devon and we will get another test next Saturday from Mervue United but we will be ready for that game also.”
Sullivan on the mark
Stephen Henderson made four changes from the side which defeated Derry City the previous week. Seamus Long, James O’Sullivan, Timmy Purcell and David Grincell came in for John Hayes, the injured Paul McCarthy, Gareth Cambridge and Willie John Kiely.
Chris Konopka played in goal, but he was carrying a knee injury and he had to be replaced by Kevin Burns for the second half. Salthill Devon created the first attack on what was a breezy night. Mike Kennedy ran on to a ball from David Shovlin but Konopka raced from his line to take the ball off the foot of Kennedy.
