Mount Sion 2-18; Dungarvan 0-17

Going into the final round of games in the senior hurling championship, seven of the eight quarter-final positions were already decided, with Mount Sion and Dungarvan fighting out the remaining berth.

At a winner takes all decider at Walsh Park, it was Mount Sion who advanced while Dungarvan, whose stated objective at the beginning of the season was avoiding relegation, can be proud of their efforts.

For a long time during this game, Dungarvan looked as if they were going to claim the precious quarter-final slot as their young side played without fear or pressure.

After 13 minutes, the ‘Old Boro’ side actually led by 0-6 to 0-1 with all but one of their points coming from play.

Luke Egan, Gavin Crotty and Colm Curran all looked very sharp and troubled the Mount Sion defence with their pace and accurate shooting.

It took Mount Sion quite a while to click into top gear and they had to be satisfied with points from Eoin Whelan and Ken McGrath in the early stages.

In the 16th minute, Mount Sion came right back into the game when a delightful centre from McGrath was fielded by the diminutive Ian Galgey who found the net from close range.

A point from play by Ken then brought Mount Sion level and another one from the three-time all-star put the Monastery men in front for the first time in the game.

Mount Sion couldn’t shake off the challenge of the youthful westerners who were soon back in front as Gavin Crotty and Colm Curran pointed.
