Tallow got their Snowcream County Senior Hurling Championship off to a flying start when they overcame the challenge of Mount Sion in the first game of a double header at Fraher Field in front of a good attendance on Sunday last.
While the thirty-five time champions hit the ground running, registering the first score of the game, they found themselves ten points down at the break, a situation nobody would have predicted.
Things got even worse for the Monastery men on the resumption with the concession of a second goal, but instead of fading the city side sprung into action and fought back manfully. Indeed, they had their chances to win the match and possibly if the sides were asked to do it all over again they might come out on top. But the half-time deficit left them with too much to do and they came up just short.
Playing against the strong wind that blew down the field in the first half, Sean Ryan laid off to Ken McGrath with just two minutes played and he popped over the first score of the game. The flood gates were expected to open but it never happened in the first thirty minutes for Mount Sion.
Five minutes after falling behind Tallow were in front with their first serious attack of the game. Eoin Condon laid the ball to Thomas Ryan who used his inter county know-how to tap the ball past Ian O’Regan in the Mount Sion goal, giving the Bridesiders a two point lead.
Things got even better for James Beecher’s charges and by the tenth minute they had stretched their advantage to five, courtesy of points from Paul Kearney and the industrious Thomas Ryan.
