Tipperary won the Tony Forristal under 14 inter-county tournament for the ninth time at a windswept Mount Sion GAA grounds on Sunday last.

Early morning rain made the ground slippy and a vicious swirling wind ensured scores were at a premium, particularly in the early exchanges as both sides struggled to overcome the elements and their exertions of the previous day.

Playing against the wind in the opening half, Waterford started brightly. Pat Fitzgerald from De La Salle gave the hosts an early lead from a free but it was quickly cancelled out by points from Tom Kirwan and Austin Tierney as Tipp found their rhythm.

Tierney, from the Shannon Rovers club, then scored the first of Tipperary’s first-half goals to give then a comfortable lead. After great teamwork, Pat Fitzgerald managed to set up Steven Bennett from Lismore/Ballysaggart Óg for a goal almost immediately, but two further Tipperary ‘majors’ from Joshua Keane from the Golden-Kilfeale Club and Jack Shelly, Mullinahone saw the Premier boys go in at the break with a comfortable 3-5 to 1-1 advantage.

Wind-assisted, Pat Fitzgerald did score a second Waterford goal after the change of ends directly from a 70, but, try as they might, it was a mere consolation as Tipperary ran out worthy winners.
