This game in Ben Wadding Park last Thursday night was a strange affair in many ways. A large crowd turned up to watch the visitors win following a penalty shoot-out (extra time was not played).
Cork led from early on and when Waterford were reduced to 10 players near the full-time whistle the contest looked well and truly over. However, they summoned up the character to score an equaliser three minutes into stoppage time only for the boys from the Banks of the Lee to prove perfect penalty-takers.
In fairness the visitors were the best team on the night. Their two full-backs, Jack McGuire and Darragh Corcoran, were absolutely superb and cut out all of the Waterford attacks without too much difficulty.
Waterford had a chance to score after three minutes when Conor Whittle skipped around the Cork goalkeeper Eric Grimes but when he crossed from the left into the penalty area there was no one moving forward to take advantage.
Cork scored a stunning goal on 10 minutes. Anthony McAlevy took a pass from Anthony Martin and he somehow managed to find the net from the right side of the penalty area despite being closed down by three Waterford defenders. His bullet-like shot nestled in the top of Darragh Gibbs’ net.
Dean Reidy had a half-chance for Waterford on 25 minutes but after taking a pass from Jack Hale his effort was saved by Eric Grimes, who thwarted Jamie Walsh shortly afterwards.
Cork put a great move together on the stroke of half-time. Anthony Martin, Anthony McAlevey and Alan Brown combined but when the latter found the net, the ‘goal’ was ruled out as the referee claimed Brown had run into an offside position.
