Fourteen-man Waterford followed up their win over Leitrim in the opening round of this year’s National League with another brace of points thanks to a comfortable eleven-point victory over London at Fraher Field on Sunday.
The Exiles, who’d requested that the game be played in Walsh Park to speed their journey home, started the brighter, making things very difficult for John Owens’ charges, and they took the lead in the fifth minute with a point courtesy of Padraig Whelan. Conor McGrath responded two minutes later for Waterford but the visitors followed up with three points courtesy of a brace of Killian Phair frees and a Darren Horan effort from play.
Killian O’Keeffe found himself with a good opportunity to cut London’s lead with 19 minutes played but he shot wide going for goal when taking his point would have been the safer option.
With London threatening to show that last year’s shock result across the water wasn’t a flash in the pan, Brian Wall reduce the Decies’ deficit to two with 14 minutes of the opening half to play when he pointed from a free.
Just seconds later Waterford were presented with the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Cillian O’Keeffe put Conor McGrath through on goal with an inch-perfect pass but with the Brickey Rangers clubman trying to plant the ball into the corner of the net for the perfect goal, it went just wide of the upright.
