Tipperary may have won Saturday night’s game and Noel McGrath may have earned most of the plaudits, but Waterford sent out a clear message to the rest of the hurling world in Thurles.

This new breed of Waterford hurlers are made of stern stuff and they will not lie down in front of anyone, regardless of the odds stacked against them.

Despite being reduced to 13 men early in the second half after the dismissals of Shane O’Sullivan and Clinton Hennessy, Waterford’s young team really put the shoulder to the wheel.

They battled gamely to the finish, restricting Tipperary to a five point win which probably raises more questions about Tipp’s capabilities than Waterford’s.
