The Dungarvan clubman wasn’t at his most efficient but still scored enough from placed balls to help earn his side the right to contest the 2010-2011 Dr Harty Cup – even if reliable sources were indicating afterwards that the Old Boro school may opt not to move up as they will be losing some of their better players in June.
It was the city side that started the brighter and inside the opening two minutes St Pauls were two points to the good. Cian Chester opened the scoring with scarcely a minute played and Ian Galgey quickly followed suit.
However, Curran cancelled out their advantage, hitting a brace of frees within four minutes. His younger brother Cathal then got in on the act and on 10 minutes he sent Dungarvan CBS into the lead with a pointed effort from play.
Gavin O’Brien responded for St Pauls, levelling the scoring just seconds later from a free. Kieran Power and Gavin O’Brien swapped points just before the half’s midway mark to keep the sides all-square in what was proving very tight encounter.
The impressive Tom Curran had Dungarvan CBS back in front when he pointed after 16 minutes and when Donal Breathnach scored the first goal of the game three minutes later it gave the Old Boro a four-point lead and it was beginning to look that the westerners could win relatively easy.
Gavin O’Brien responded with a point for St Pauls to cut the deficit to three but the man’s effort was soon cancelled out courtesy of a Donal Breathnach point with seven minutes of the opening half left.
