A MAN in his seventies was seriously injured in a house fire in Waterford City in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The fire broke out at a house in St Herblain Park at approximately 4am.
The man was brought to University Hospital Waterford (UHW) where he was treated for smoke inhalation and was described as being in a serious but stable condition.
A couple in their 40s, also in the house at the time of the fire, escaped without injuries.
Fire crews from both Waterford and Tramore attended the scene and a technical examination was carried out. It’s believed the cause of the fire was electrical.
Meanwhile, crews from Waterford and Thomastown also attended a house fire in Mullinavat in the early hours of New Year’s morning. Nobody was in the house at the time.
There were a number of drink driving arrests in Waterford City over the Christmas and New Year period, and Gardaí are also investigating a robbery which occurred at Reddy’s Off-Licence in Ballybricken on New Year’s Day.
On arrival at the scene, Gardaí were informed that a lone male entered the Off Licence and produced “some kind of weapon” according to investigating Gardaí.
He demanded cash and cigarettes from a female staff member. He took some cigarettes and cash from the till. The suspect, who was described as tall, had a local accent, wore a white hoodie and grey tracksuit pants, gloves and also had a scarf around his face. Nobody was injured in the incident.
