A goal five minutes from time by substitute Barry Mulvane proved decisive for Ballygunner as they saw off the challenge of Clare champions Cratloe at Walsh Park on Sunday last.

Mullane seized upon a long delivery from fellow substitute Robbie Cunningham before firing past Cratloe custodian Sean Hawes and into the corner of the net.

The goal put the Waterford kingpins five points clear and despite their herculean efforts, the Bannermen couldn’t make up the difference in the remaining time.

Cratloe made the journey down to Waterford after winning an historic first ever Clare senior hurling title while Ballygunner had enjoyed their 11th success in Waterford.

There was no evidence of any nerves or inexperience in the Cratloe camp early on as they really took the game to their hosts.
